LANSING, MI – It was a warm and sunny day for soccer in Lansing on Saturday, May 18. Lansing Common FC opened league play in the Midwest Premier League’s Great Lakes West Division with a 6-0 win against Indy Boyz FC. It was a match Head Coach Brent Sorg wanted more from offensively than what the Robins put forward the previous week, when they only managed to produce a single goal in their 1-0 win over Livonia City FC.
Coach Sorg’s players responded well. Jack Voight, Lansing’s all-time leading goal-scorer, put the Robins on the board in the sixth minute and the Robins kept going from there.
Seth Russ hit a thunderous strike into the top-right of the net off of a great assist from Munir Sherali. Coach Sorg emphasized in training how important Sherali would be on the offensive side of the ball. Especially on set pieces and in the passing game. Lansing controlled the ball throughout the first half and the Robins repeatedly took advantage of the space given to them by Indy Boyz.
Lansing’s efficient passing soon led to another goal. This time from forward Ty Usiak in the 32nd minute. The ball distribution of the Robins created several more offensive chances and Indy Boyz was unable to find a response.
Ty Usiak found the back of the net again in the 38th minute, increasing the Robins’ lead to 4-0. Indy Boyz traveled to Lansing with only three substitute players and the constant ball pressure by the Robins caused them to wear down. Lansing found the back of the net again when Fady Omar made it 5-0 shortly before halftime. An assist from Omar’s younger brother Samy helped Lansing add to their lead before the break.
In the second half, the Robins once again set the tone early when Fady Omar scored in the 54th minute to complete his brace. It would be the last goal of the match, making the final scoreline 6-0 to give Lansing three points in their first league game of the season.
Lansing Common Football Club returns to action at 6:00pm on Wednesday, May 29, when they travel to face divisional opponent Northern Indiana FC in South Bend, IN.
