LANSING, Mich. — With the Fourth of July break concluded, Lansing Common FC is hosting Midwest United FC in a crucial Midwest Premier League matchup on Friday, July 11 at 7 p.m.

LCFC recently picked up its first loss of the season against Goshen City FC on June 29, 3-1. Following the loss, Lansing head coach Brent Sorg said that the goal of this season wasn’t to go undefeated, but it was to win a championship.

“There’s a lot to play for still,” Sorg said. “Three winnable games and the league could be determined by it after this weekend.”

The Great Lakes West Division standings currently have Goshen City FC and Holland Rovers on top with 17 points each from eight games while Lansing is on 16 points with a game in hand. If the Robins can take care of business on Friday, that would help propel them back to the top, Sorg explained.

Tensions were high against Goshen City on June 29, but Sorg felt that his team did a good job of keeping their emotions in check. However, he thought their style of play and ability to retain possession of the ball weren’t as strong.

“Getting back to really who we are, our identity and that is us pressing the ball and then us being dangerous when we win possession,” Sorg said.

LCFC and Midwest United previously met on May 23 in Grand Rapids. That match ended in a 1-1 draw with Lansing’s lone goal coming from forward Jack Voight.

Sorg thinks that his players will be seeing a different Midwest United team this time around.

“We’re going to take one step at a time, focus on the one that’s ahead of us with Midwest, and we’ve got to get a result there to put ourselves in a position to continue to compete for a championship,” Sorg said.

Midwest United is coming off a 0-0 draw against 1927SC on June 29 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Lansing and Midwest United will go head-to-head on Friday, July 11, at 7 p.m. at Eastern Stadium. Tickets are just $5 online or $7 at the gate. Food vendors include Smash Shack, Capital City Sweets and Lansing Common’s regular concessions.
