LANSING, Mich. — After a 1–0 friendly victory over fellow Lansing club Red Cedar FC, Lansing Common FC travels to Goshen City, Ind., for a Midwest Premier League matchup between unbeaten teams that could shake up the top of the standings.
Goshen City FC is 2-0-2 on the season and currently sits atop the Great Lakes West Division with eight points through four games and a goal differential of plus-four. LCFC head coach Brent Sorg understands his opponent’s level of play and prepared his team throughout the week for the high-caliber matchup.
“We’re going to be tested. They’re going to press us. We’re going to have to be able to play and deal with that,” Sorg said. “We’ve watched some film and trained this past week to prepare.”
Heading into the match, LCFC sits at 2-0-1 and finds itself in a prime position to take control of the division. With seven points and a goal differential of plus-three through three games, leaving Indiana with a win or even a tie would be significant.
“We would love to get three (points),” Sorg said. “It would be massive.”
Picking up one point from a tie would be enough to take a share of first place in the division. Earning three points from a win would put the Robins alone at the top, with a two-point lead while having played one fewer game than Goshen City.
With first place on the line, Sorg knows his team will have to execute its game plan flawlessly in such a high-stakes contest.
“We’re gonna have to have our very best, and we know that, and that’s hopefully what we bring at the end of the day,” Sorg said.
LCFC may have been in action just two days ago on Friday, but most players who were featured in the friendly were reserves, with only a few first-team members sprinkled in. That leaves the regular starters rested and ready to go both physically and mentally for the pivotal midseason matchup.
“The guys know what the game means, because they know Goshen has two wins and two draws,” Sorg said. “They know that this game means a lot.”
Kickoff between LCFC and Goshen City is set for 5 p.m. tonight at John Ingold Athletic Complex, as the Robins travel across state lines hoping to leave Indiana with sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes West Division.
